AN APPLE A DAY (EVENT #2)
In a room full of pizzas, soft pretzels and Ben & Jerry's, Eric Doerr (Newark, DE) is going with the healthy approach, as a red delicious apple is perched next to his stack.
After calling a turn bet, a third heart peels off and Doerr check-calls his opponent's all-in bet for 3k. Doerr turns over the flush (10 9 hearts) and his opponent mucks, knowing he's eliminated.
"I'm going to sign it (the apple) and give it to whoever knocks me out," says Doerr who cashed in Event #1 of the Summer Open. Doerr's joke isn't lost on the rest of the table, as he steals a page from Barry Greenstein, who gives a signed copy of his book to players that knock him out of tournaments.
A few orbits later Doerr's (10 10) is up against the (K J) of Max Almonor (Brooklyn, NY). A river 10 gives Doerr a set, but Almonor the straight, to eliminate Doerr who ships 22k.
"I had a lot of outs," says Almonor who shoves after the flop, but didn't get the victory apple. "That's okay, I ate already," he says while stacking 50k.
"I'm keeping it," says Doerr, who says he'll be back to play in Saturday's 1k.
The final total for Event 2: 379 players, prize pool under construction.
Level 5 underway (150/300/25 ante)
