Event #11 - H.O.S.E
Buy-In: $1,000 + $90
Ming "Joy" Reslock rolled her eyes as she saw her husband coming towards her carrying two racks of tournament chips. Her vebal slight was in jest as she welcomed Chris to join her on Table 2.

LIVING IN PARADISE
EVENT #9
6-MAX CHAMPION
6-MAX CHAMPION
Only 5 hands are played heads-up when Maurice Paradis is in paradise with the 6-max championship.
"It feels great," says Maurice Paradis, who beats Josh Brikis (Monroeville, PA) for the title.
On the final hand, Brikis raises with (6-3) and Paradis calls with (A 10). The flop is [10 10 6] and the action is underway. Brikis bets 120k, Paradis raises to 300k, Paradis shoves all-in and sees the bad news.
Paradis' set of tens holds and Brikis has another runner-up finish, after finishing second in the same event at the World Series of Poker. "I took control of the tournament early and did that most of the way," says Brikis, who earns $22,269, "I took a hit five-handed when my jacks ran into queens. I built it back up, but couldn't get it done.
This was Paradis' first 6-max tournament, live or on-line and was able to adjust his game easily.
"I played under the gun like I was in mid-position, it wasn't that tough."

LIMIT CHAMP - WHITELEY
REACHING NEW LIMITS - EVENT # 10
After eliminating the third and fourth place finishers, Norman Whiteley (Newark, DE) closes the deal by beating Al Riccobono (Ossining, NY) heads-up to win the Limit Championship.
On the final hand, the players are even in chips as Riccobono holds (Q 3) against Whiteley's (7 9 of hearts). The flop is [Q 7 2] with one heart, and all the money's in. Riccobono's in good shape with top pair against middle pair, but running hearts gives Whiteley the flush and the title.
"I'm dissappointed," says Riccobono who earns $7,556 for second place, "the trophy meant a lot to me. The money comes and goes, but the glory is what we all play for."
"I'm thrilled," says Whiteley who specializies in limit tournaments. "You can avoid the train wrecks in limit and get to play more poker (than in NL)."
Whiteley's title follows his 8th place finish at Brogata in the Summer Open stud event.

NICOLE ROWE SPEAKS OUT
If you have been following the blog since our coverage of the 2009 Poker Open has started, you would have read about Nicole Rowe and her second place finish in the Ladies Event #7. The significance wouldn't be that it was her second, second place finish in a Borgata Ladies event in 3 years, nor would it be that Nicole is facing a bout with breast cancer. Although it should be. Instead, the emphasis was on the fact that a guy played and outlasted her. Until now.
I sat down with Nicole and asked her about her experience. "You know, I really didn't notice that a man was playing until about half way through the tournament. There was a commotion at one of the other tables involving some women having a heated argument over a hand or something. Once we all looked up and asked questions what was going on, everyone made light of the fact that a man was playing."
Men playing in a ladies event is not new. Jose Conseco and Phil Gordan had played in the ladies event at the Commerce Casino in 2007 as a humorous attempt at some publicity. There have also been men that have played in the WSOP ladies event as well as sort of a joke. It certainly isn't new.
The issue this time around was that the "man" was doing well. He had acquired a massive chip stack mid way through and didn't seem to be letting up. With just about 7 tables left Nicole was moved to his table. "I had a nice stack myself and made a move with J's against a player who shoved on me. I made the call pre and she had Q's to which I never caught up. That left me with $15k in chips and being on fumes," said Rowe. "A few hands later I had open shoved with AK and Korotki made the call with a much lesser hand." She doubled up and continued on in the tournament with a healthy stack.
Everyone knows how this panned out and Nicole wanted to set the record straight. "I heard a lot of rumblings from some of the women about how they thought that Borgata should have taken a stance on not letting him play."
From both a legal and regulatory standpoint, NJ Casinos (which includes Borgata) must allow anyone who is over the age of 21 the opportunity to participate in all events. As such, when the "man" insisted upon gaining entry into the tournament, Borgata had no option but to allow him to participate. (FYI, the “law” referenced above is the federal anti-discrimination laws. Regulatory guidelines require NJ Casinos to permit anyone over 21 to enter into any such gaming event offered.)
Thus, from a legal standpoint, there is nothing any casino can do about preventing anyone playing in a "special tournament". Poker rooms count on the sensibilities of players to respect who and what the tournament is put together for. Unfortunately these days, it's more about what is legal than what is right.
"I couldn't be more happy with the Borgata, and I am proud to call them my home. I started my official live career here and will always play any events they put on over any other casino." Rowe was stoic in her response. "I really need to thank the Borgata for their graciousness, their generosity, and their support. What I will be going through is going to be much easier knowing the friends and what I would call family now, that I have earned at the Borgata."
We here on media row, and the entire Borgata staff, as well as many of the players wish her all the best and offer our support as she begins her battle against breast cancer.

EVENT #9 - NL HOLD EM (6-MAX)
Josh Brikis lost a chunk of his stack when his opponent hit runner, runner to make a flush. Josh flopped middle pair on a K/7/4 board and made a tough call on the turn when his opponent open-shoved with only a flush draw. The river spade hurt Brikis, but he remains the favorite in this short-handed event.
The young and talented Jeff Wicker is still alive in this event, as he's made back to back Borgata 6-handed Final Tables.

EVENT #9 (6-MAX) - QUIGLEY III, 7TH
7th, Robert Quigley III - $5,240
It doesn't take long for the first elimination at the 6-max final table. Robert Quigley III (Pittsburgh, PA) pushes his last 42k with (K 8) and is up against Josh Brikis (3 3).
It's an interesting flop [K 8 3], Quigley flops two pairs, but trails Brikis' set. The turn and river are no help and Quigley's out in 7th place, and says his 6-handed on-line experience was a big help, "a lot of the players here didn't understand the concept of playing short handed, playing on-line was a huge benefit."
The biggest difference between a short table and a full ring for Quigley is being aggressive. "I was able to pick up a lot of blinds and antes by being aggressive pre-flop," he says, "I didn't have to play a lot of small ball.
Dannny Mui, the other short stack at the table, gets a rare quadruple-up when his pocket aces hold and he goes from 48k to 260k.
Level 19 (8k/16k/2k) continues with Brikis leading the way with nearly 1 million chips.

FINAL TABLE, EVENT #9 (6-MAX)
Bob Depasquale's (Randolph, NJ) elimination in 8th place ($3,930) sets the 6-max final table. Chip leader Josh Brikis (Monroeville, PA) successfully lobbies to have final table 7 handed instead of two tables, one with only three players.

EVENT #11 - H.O.S.E
Joseph Astorina (Brooklyn, NY) considers Omaha Hi/Lo his best game, but is playing them all well today. He scooped a pot from Matt Glantz to take his stack to 25K. The mixed-game tournament player has honed his skills online, but says he feels "real comfortable" in today's field.
Lance Mesler (Linden, NJ) is a self-proclaimed 7-card stud cash game player who has been around Atlantic City cardrooms for a long time. He's avoided the table talk and friendly banter from Will "The Thrill" on Table 1 and taken his stack to 28k.
All 6 tables just broke with only 48 players remaining.

EVENT #12 UPDATE
The unofficial number for Event #12 is set at 483. Spattered among the field are a pile of tourney pro's from all over. Considering it's a $350 buy-in it was thought that the day would start off pretty quickly.
Vinny Pahuja proved us right on the first hand of the day. From the cut off he opened bet and was flatted by both the small blind and Taylor Shur in the big blind.. The flop came [6h 3s 3d]. Vinny c-bet the flop and was flatted by Shur. The turn came [Ad] and Vinny bet again, only this time Shur check raised.
The river brought a [5d] to give Vinny what he thought was the hidden 3rd nut flush and this time he checked. Shur bet $2200 and Vinny shoved his remaining stack. Shur insta called and opened up with 2 sixes giving him the flopped boat. Shur sits on about 27k.
John "Kojack" Kosak is playing well today and thinks he has a chance. He sits on just over 17k. "I'm feelin' it today."
Joey Brooks is scrapping along sitting with 14k, as is Gordan Eng, sitting with just over the starting stack. Pete Herold is having a nice day doubling up on his first hand with Aces against his opponents Kings and has just over 31k.
I haven't seen too many stacks over 30k so we'll put Pete among the chip leaders for now. It's a busy day here in the tournament room with the 6 max grinding down to a winner, the limit tournament playing to a winner and the $1000 H.O.S.E. event plodding along.
We'll have all the updates as they come.

NO LIMIT HERE (EVENT #10 - LIMIT)
As the limit tournament approaches the money, chip leader Hung Nguyen (Hillsborough, NJ) continues to build his stack.
The flop comes down [Q J 5 two clubs], Nguyen bets and Uldarico Marcelo (Baltimore, MD) asks, "you got the queen?"
"We'll see," replies Nguyen as the turn brings [J of clubs]. Nguyen bets the limit 2,400, Marcelo calls.
The river is [3 of clubs]. Nguyen bets 2,400. "Raisey Daisey," says Marcelo, followed by a Nguyen reraise, which Marcelo calls.
Marcelo flips over the ace high flush, but was drawing dead on the river, as Nguyen turned the full boat with (QJ).
Hung is closing in on the 100k chip mark with an average stack at 51k.
The top 18 players cash, as 20 remain.

EVENT #8 - TAEMEE FEUER WINS IT ALL
It took awhile to break everything down from 3 handed to a winner but we have our newest champion.
With the blinds catching up to everyone, there was very little post flop action and even fewer flops. Taemee Feuer was sitting with around 50% of the chips in play and Trevor "Tremomey" Savage was her first victim when Feuer called his all-in. Savage holding AJ was far behind Feuer's AK and never caught up. He will hit the cage for $36,231 and a 3rd place finish.
With an even more commanding lead, she quickly took out second place finisher David S. by beating his Q2 with J9 to take home the Event #8 Deep Stack No Limit Hold'em Championship for her first major tournament cash.
David S. will take home $66,619 for second place. Taemee Feuer earns a nice payday with $108,367 and the 2009 Borgata Poker Open trophy for Event #8 Deep Stack No Limit Hold'em Championship.
Final table finish:
1st - Tamemee Feuer
2nd - David S
3rd - Trever "Tremomey" Savage
4th - Blake Buffington
5th - Randy Cherkas
6th - Jason Turner
7th - Frank Bellino

EVENT #8 - BLAKE BUFFINGTON ELIMINATED IN 4TH
And then there were three.
The blinds are starting to catch up to the stacks after more the 28 hours of play. Trevor "Tremomey" Savage has been very quiet over the last few levels and went all-in preflop and was called by Blake Buffington. Buffington was at risk but ahead with his KT versus the T9 of Savage.
The flop gave Savage an open ended straight draw which got there on the river. Blake Buffington takes home $31,556 for 4th place.

EVENT #8 - RANDY CHERKAS ELIMINATED IN 5TH
Taemee Feuer has just taken down a huge pot at the expense of Randy Cherkas. After some confusion preflop when David Shrewsbury inadvertently string bet on button after raise after Cherkas limped. Feuer called from the big blind and Cherkas after. The flop came out 8c 7c 7s. Feuer was the first to act and announce all-in, Cherkas called and Shrewsbury went in the tank. He eventually folded QQ face up.
Feuer tabled Jc 9c for the gutshot and flush draw, Cherkas was holding T9 offsuit for the open ended straight draw. It was a blank on the turn and the Ten on the river gave Feuer the straight and now over 11,000,000 in chips.
Randy Cherkas will cash out $26,881 for 5th place.

EVENT #8 - JASON TURNER ELIMINATED IN 6TH
Friends of Jason Turner who are following his progress online can now go to bed. After a great run through the tournament he is now headed to the cage. With big action preflop, he got his QQ in bad against David Shrewsbury's KK. The king on the flop did him no favors and running queens were not in his future.
After playing well throughout, Turner will take home $22,206 for 6th place.

EVENT #8 - FRANK BELLINO ELIMINATED IN 7TH
It took awhile for the first person to get knocked out on the final table but they are moving now. While I was typing the previous post about there was a huge noise from the final table across the room. Riggstad came over rubbing and shaking his head.
After all the preflop action was done, Randy Cherkas had Frank Bellino all-in preflop. A "classic" race as they say with Cherkas QQ versus Bellino's AK. The flop came up gold for Bellino in K 5 T. The turn card A gave Bellino aces up but more outs for Cherkas. He went the hard way and rivered a Queen for the set and win.
Bellino battled the entire day and takes home $17,531.

EVENT #8 - MARK GUTHRIDGE ELIMINATED IN 8TH
Just one of the those hands that happen. Jason Turner made a preflop move into Mark Guthridge who pushed all-in over the top. It wasn't that much more to call but Turner had two live cards with T6 against Guthridge and his A9. Turner flopped an open ender with 8 9 J and got there with the turn card Q.
Guthridge will take home $12,856.

SHUT IT DOWN (EVENT #10 - LIMIT)
Riccobono (left) & Lunenfeld
Limit players are limiting they're play tonight and shutting it down with 27 left. The players had the option to continue playing until they hit the money at 18, but the decision wasn't unanimous, so it's time to bag and tag.
"This sucks," says one player, "one guy over there only has a couple of chips. What's he going to do, come back tomorrow for one hand and go home?"
A quick scan of the chips and there are three unofficial leaders:
Marc Lunenfeld (Virginia Beach, VA) 79,000
Al Riccobono (Ossining, NY) 72,500
Jean-Philippe Piquette (Quebec, Canada) 69,500
Lunenfeld as run well at Borgata with multiple cashes, including 1st place in Event #3 at the 2007 Summer Open.
Play resumes Tuesday at 2 PM. We'll post the official chip leaders after 9 AM.
EVENT #8 - TONY RUBERTO ELIMINATED IN 9TH
It didn't take long for more action to knock another player out. A preflop raise from Randy Cherkas followed by an all-in shove by Tony Ruberto who had Cherkas covered. Jason Turner concerned the call before mucking and Cherkas called off his chips.
It was a battle of Cherka's 99 versus Ruberto's A9. The board ran out with no help for Ruberto and he was crippled. Turner told us that he folded 66 after Ruberto shipped in which would have seen him flop quads.
Cherkas is up around 2,600,000 after a 900,000 lose the following hand. Tony Ruberto takes home $9,350 for 9th place.

EVENT #8 - EUGENE GORELIK ELIMINATED IN 10TH
It took a while for us to lose our first player of the Event #8 final table. There have been very few flops with most pots being taken down with preflop raises or the occasional 3-bet. Trevor "Tremomey" Savage has been forcing much of the action but it's Taemee Feuer who collects the biggest pot.
Eugene Gorelik had not been making much headway and made a move for all his chips. Randy Cherkas made the call and Feuer moved in over the top putting Cherkas also at risk if he called. Cherkas folded and it where Feuer's AQ versus Gorelik's Q4. The board ran out 2 Q 2 7 5 and no help for Gorelik. He takes home $6,078 for 10th place.
Taemee Feuer moves up to 5,500,000 in chips.
