CLOSE OF BUSINESS

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Busquet's Big Bag

As they play the final 5 hands of the night, one towering chip stacks stands out. It's on table 16 right in front of media row and it belongs to Olivier Busquet (New York, NY).

"I had two big hands, one early and one late," he says while bagging 525k, the unofficial chip leader. During the second level he hit a set of kings against two pairs to build his stack to 300k.

The second big score is during the last level. Busquet is a heavy underdog, but not at risk with (A K) vs. (K K). He's fortunate to hit an ace on the flop, but he's not apologizing for the play. "He wasn't three betting his big hands, so when he did there I didn't think he was that strong."

Busquet's 200k score puts him over the 500k mark, setting himself up for Day 3. "We've got a long way to go for the money, but I'm hopefully going to get a good night's sleep. I'm just going to try and keep running well and playing well. They usually go hand in hand."

As players bag and tag for the night, Busquet barely fits his stack into one bag as it's bursting at the seams.

The unofficial count is 169 players returning Tuesday at 11 AM to resume play with the average stack at 181k. The bubble breaks with 100 players left and they'll continue until 27 players remain before shutting down Day 3.

As Tournament Director Tab Duchteau says while players are leaving the Even Center, "get here early, it's going to be a long day."

Official chip counts will be posted sometime after 9 AM.

RUNNER RUNNER PERFECT

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

As play is winding down for the day, there wasn't anything too terribly crazy going on in the room. Some short stacks were trying their hand at doubling up or going home, or players protecting their stacks.

That was until there was less than 30 minutes remained in the day when Bobby Suer enticed an opponent to put his last 110,000 chips in on the flop drawing just about as thin as it gets. During the Deep Stack event we wrote about a 97-3 bad beat put on Ryan Eriquezzo, this time it was Suer on the wrong end.

On a flop of Kd 5d 3d, Suer was more than happy to get all the chips in the middle with his flopped flush (Qd Td) versus his opponent's top pair queen kicker (Ks Qs). He needed to sweat the board going runner-runner perfect.

Queen of hearts on the turn.

And the case queen on the river for the boat and the hand.

PLAYER PROFILE

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT

Corey Bierra made his mark on the tournament poker world when he collected $433,050 for his 2nd place finish in a '05 WSOP Circuit Event. Bierra took his poker winnings and looked for a more stable career as a family man. "I took my money and ran with it...I didn't want to donate it all back," jokes the part-time player. He invested in a successful franchise and now runs his own business.

He enjoys being a self-made family man in the comforts of Atlanta, Georgia. "I tried playing all the tournaments and traveling the circuit, but it just wasn't for me...I've got two kids at home, I'm in bed every night at 9pm."

LEVEL 15

Back from dinner for about an hour now and we found some movement. With one level left in day 2 play seems to be tightening up. "I'm running so bad, I just hope to make it to day three, and maybe find a rush somewhere." said Manish Patel.

Chip counts around the room have moved a little. Here's the latest list.

Michael Binger - $90k
Billy Gazes - $150k
Jason Dewitt - $550k
Eric Siegel - $170k
Vinny Pahuja - $130k
Mike Leah - $270k
Gordon Eng - $190k
Robert Zarzycki - $110k
Feming Chan - $70k
Brent Keller - $65k
Jason Warriner - $80k
Matt Brady - $220k

It looks to be that Jason Dewitt is our chip leader at this point with over $550k in chips. We'll bring the bust outs as they come before day 2 ends in about two hours.

ERIC SIEGEL PLEDGES FOR NEPHCURE

Eric Siegel, Director of Marketing and Player Development of Poker Players International, has pledged a portion of all tournament winnings to Nephcure, an organization that raises awareness and funds for two potentially devastating Kidney diseases. Nephrotic Syndrome and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).

PPI sponors the Nephcure Poker Pledge program where amateur and professional poker players donate a percentage of their poker winnings to the cause. To find out more information you can click on this link.

"It's a fantastic organization that focuses on bringing awareness to a devastating disease. We do everything we can to help out. This rare and debilitating disease effects a ton of kids every year and we want to do everything we can to help," said Siegel, who's son Owen suffers from the disease.

Eric is sitting on just about 80k in chips and hopes to improve on that after dinner.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Raimondi Raising the Antics

Rail birds and players are truly enjoying the unofficial featured table. Table 4 has professionals Gavin Smith and Billy Gazes, local pro Joey "The B" Brooks (Egg Harbor Twp. NJ) and chip leaders Matt Brown (Hoboken, NJ) and Frank "The Frank" Molinari.

But the introduction of a new character takes the entertainment to a whole new level. Biagio Raimondi (Aberdeen, NJ) is a self admitted "goofball," and a guy you want to be around for the sheer joy of how he oscillates between being smart as a tack, to ignorant bliss.

Raimondi wanders to the table with his smallish stack in a rack and asks Smith if he's sitting at Table 4 seat 6. "No, I'm seat 4, but there's an empty seat over there you can have," Smith says, "I know counting's hard, but you'll be alright."

As the 84 year old Raimondi contemplates if he's even at the right table, play continues. "I was told to come here, but I don't want to be here. I'm ready for dinner," he says as the clock shows 10 minutes on the countdown timer.

At this point players are laughing and trying to convince Raimondi he's at the right place and that if he doesn't play he needs to at least leave his chips at the table. "But I don't want to, I'm hungry," he says.

That's when Tournament Director Tab Duchteau steps in to massage the situation and get the chips in play.

As this is going on, Smith is all-in preflop for his last 50k and and Gazes calls. Gazes flops a set of sixes to bust Smith's pocket aces. "Nothing's better," says Gazes about busting his friendly rival, "winning will be anti-climatic compared to this."

Meanwhile, back at comedy central, Raimondi starts telling anyone who will listen how his name Biondi is actually Italian for "Brad Pitt," and how he was one of the top college quarterbacks in the country in the 1940s and played professional for the New York Yankees of the old AFL.

After another good laugh, Raimondi leaves the Event Center to get a head start on dinner, so we thought.

"Extremely entertaining, that's for sure" says Brown, who's at 325k. "Not a dull moment," adds Molinari who's at 250k.

On the last hand before break, Brooks shoves all in on a queen high board. After his opponent tanks and folds, Brooks shows (A Q) and then jokes with Duchteau on how, "this is the guy I'm going to double-up," as he points to Raimondi's empty seat.

That's when the fun continues.

Raimondi returns with photographed copies of his college and pro football days. Sure enough the headline reads Raimondi Ranks As Nation's No. 1 Passer. The articles mention how Raimondi led Indiana to its first Big Ten Title in 1945 and how he's talked about in the same breath as the great Texas quarterback Bobby Layne.

When we joke about finding a Kinko's in Borgata, he quickly fires back, "oh no, I had these up in my room in case I make the final table. You can have them, I've got more in the car."

Raimondi continues with stories from 60 years ago. "They called me Ben 'The Bullet.' We beat Purdue 26-nothing for the first ever title," he says. "We invented the bullet pass. Before that, guys were just throwing loop-dee-loop passes," adding that he led the nation with 35 completions in 1946.

Bottom line, his football credentials are legit, but his poker acumen isn't at the same level. He's only been playing the game for a year and the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship is only his second live casino tournament. "I'm having fun," he says, "but I don't know what I'm doing."

After telling the folks on media row more war stories, Raimondi leaves again saying he might take a nap. He eventually returns twenty minutes late for the start of Level 15, but doesn't last long. His (A K) is gutted by Brooks, who's (J 7) hits a seven on the flop and holds to take Biondi's last 17k.

We're not sure if Raimondi ever got to eat, but it sure was fun chewing the fat.

Level 15 (1,200/2,400/300 ante) continues.

LAST HAND BEFORE DINNER

The room had been cleared out for about 10 minutes when dinner broke. All but table #22. As I picked up the aqction, there was a board of [Kc 4c Ts] [8d].

The hand involved two players and all others had left for break. John Larochelle was contemplating a call of his opponents open turn shove for $52,500 with about $60k in the pot.

He tanked hard. He asked every question in the book. "How many tournaments have you played?". "Will you show me if you call?". "Should I go with my gut? I'm thinking about shipping it in with a bare ace." "This is so sick man, I know I'm best right here."

His opponent, Carmen Cavella (Cav), sat there stone faced, and never once looked up, acknowledged, or answered a question.

Larochelle, semi pushed his chips in at least three times during the 3 and a half minutes of his tank. Cavella eventually asked for a clock, and Larochelle agreed. "That's fair. I've been taking a while, and I apologize and appreciate your patience."

The floor started the clock, and Larochelle folded before he got the count down. "Good hand bro." One of the players who had happened by to watch half way through gave Cav congratulations and admiration on how he handled the tank. "I've never seen anyone sit so still and give away so little information for such a long time."

Players have 52 minutes left to finish dinner before they come back for level 15.

The players are heading into their final level before the dinner break. The field has dropped to under 250 players, inching closer to the money bubble. They'll have two levels after the break before ending their day.

Former Champ Can't Milk More Chips

One of the feel good stories is how Roy Winston, the 2007 Poker Open Championship, got into this year's Championship Event, unfortunately it's a short run.

"The Oracle" won his seat by taking down the Put a Bad Beat on Hunger tournament at Borgata in August, but is on the rail since the last break.

The qualifying event was sponsored by the Cabot Creamery Cooperative which made a $20,000 donation to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.

"They're definitely pulling for me," said Winston while playing during his up and down Day 2. Winston donated a portion of his winnings to the food bank and was planning to do the same if he cashed this week.

Level 14 (1k/2k/200 ante) continues.

DEWITT'S LUCK CONTINUES

With the WCOOP starting 20 minutes ago, Jason Dewitt found a little reprieve for how he was going to deal with his conundrum. That is, how do I play the big stack he has accumulated today in day 2 of the WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship Event, and still play in the WCOOP (online) where he has the chip lead.

Fortunately, there is a public area directly across from the event center where Borgata offers free WiFi. Jason will be able to play in between both games without having to travel up to the 42nd floor.

"It's great that the Borgata is being so accomodating. Just another reason we continually play here", said Jason.

Currently he holds the chip lead in the WCOOP at $1,111,177 in chips, and has a stack of over $230k in the Borgata Poker Open WPT Championship Event.

LACEY JONES ELIMINATED FROM CHAMPIONSHIP

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

The players are heading off on their second break of the day following Level 12. The field is very close to getting under 300 players remaining, just a few hundred from bursting the money bubble.

Lacey Jones was our latest player to walk away from the table, all the effort and grinding with an unhappy ending. She battled her shorter stack the entire day against a table that was generating plenty of action but nowhere to gain traction. Sitting with just 14,000 she moved in after a limper with AT and ran into AK. She said the player almost laid it down pre-flop but called and she found no joy on the board.

When the players return for Level 13 the blinds will be 800-1,600 with 300 ante. The average chip stack is around 100,000.

Random chip stacks from around the room:

(June File Photo)

2002 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion Robert Varkonyi is out the door on one of the first hands of Day 2. He only has 25k to start, less than half of the average stack. The disappointing finish means he'll be home awaiting the return of his wife Olga, who's conspicuously absent from this year's Poker Open.

"It's the first time we've been apart in years," says Varkonyi, "it's strange not having her around." Olga's currently in Lipetsk, Russia (300 miles south of Moscow), returning to her roots for a cousin's wedding.

"It's a great trip for her and the kids. They've grown up bilingual so to go to a different place, with different food and to immerse themselves in the language is a great experience."

The Varkoyni's have had success at Borgata over the years, Robert finished second in Event #5 of the Summer Open, while Olga's had several cashes, including in the 2009 Winter Open 1k, Event #4.

"She'd really like to be here, but family comes first."

Level 12 (600/1,200/100 ante) continues.

SHAWN GLINES ELIMINATED

With an early position limper, Maurice Hawkins makes it 6k to go. Glines, who is in the bb makes it 25k. The limper folds and Hawkins shoves. Glines calls and shows two Jacks. Hawkins opens up with AQo and they race off.

With a Q on the turn, Glines is done and hits the rail. "I was really in a good spot being behind him. I can't fold there ever when he shoves and I got it in with the best. He's just hitting everything and racing well."

The pot brings Hawkins stack back up close to 300k.

CHECKIN' IN WITH THE BIG STACKS

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Aminov Near the Top

As players return from their first break the big stacks continue to navigate the minefields. "Trying to stay consistent," says Gabriel Aminov (Fresh Meadows, NY) who's slightly higher than the 214k he began the day with as chip leader.

"I'm cautiously optimistic," he adds after watching Allen Kessler bust from his table with pocket aces. "I'm playing the cards and trying not to take advantage of my stack too much. That's what gets you into trouble."

Starting third in chips is Rhett Butler (Rockville, MD), the 5th place finisher of the 2006 WSOP Main Event. His starting stack of 154k is down nearly 100k after losing two sizeable pots."I'm alright, but it's a long day. I'm tired already, I think I'm getting old," says the 47 year old insurance agent.

Nerves effects Frank Molinari and his second place chip count (169k) when he see's poker pro Gavin Smith at his table. "When he sat down I got nervous," says the Moonachie, NJ resident." Then I started playing bad. I'm good now. Check back in an hour I'll have it back over 100," he says while shuffling 71k.

Level 11 (500/1k/100 ante) underway.

KESSLER GONE

After getting his aces cracked by KJ offsuit, Allen Kessler, gives the bloggers on media row a few soundbites.

Quoted by "Chainsaw"

- "Weird things just keep happening to me."

- "I show down QQ, JJ and AK and the guy still thinks I don't have anything..."

- "It's so bizarre this happens to me in every tournament"

JOEY BROOKS MOVES IT AROUND

At table #4 Joey "The B" Brooks raises an under the gun caller to $2800. Four players call, including Gavin Smith and the original limper.

Joey laughed and says, "Anyone else want to call?". Gavin replies, "I only called cause they made me!".

The flop comes [2c Th 2s]. Brooks leads out to $7300 after a check, and it folds around to the original check. He thinks and shows Brooks a T, and says, "There's your respect Joe". Brooks mucks face down and scoops an 11k pot.

Checking the room I gathered some stacks. Jason Dewitt is sitting on just about $75k. He took a hit early on but got it all back and is around 8k ahead of his starting stack. Eric Siegel has gotten his stack up to 95k after dodging a flush draw against his two pair.

Robert Zarzycki of Fantasy Football fame as well as his poker accomplishments is sitting on just about 85k.

Sean "sprstoner" Glines, sitting to the left of Maurice Hawkins (265k) has around 60k and Gordon Eng is sitting on just about 45k.

More updates shortly.

MIKE DENTALE ELIMINATED

Mikey "Deisel, Guns, Unbelievable, Bro" Dentale started the day with just over $120k in chips. If you know him, you'll understand his "unbelievable" nickname. Unbelievable because of his propensity to run super hot or super ridiculous.

Within 5 hands Mike was down to less than half his starting stack when he suffered 3 coolers. Once when his Jacks were beaten by 4's who setted up on the flop. Second, his straight was run down by a triple board paired river to a small pocket pair, and finally his set was flushed away on the turn.

His last hand saw this action...

With three to a flop of [As 3s 7s], Mike checked. The second to act made it 6k, and the third re raised to 12k. Mike made the call.

The turn came a [Qh]. Dentale shoved and second to act insta mucked. However, his third opponent made the snap call and showed two red Aces.

Mike was drawing to a non paried spade, and when the [3c] hit the river, Mike was out. On a side not, the second to act player banged the table rather hard when the three fell and everyone knew immediately that he had mucked a flopped set of three's and missed his quads on the river.

Dentale flew out of the room rather miffed at a lost opportunity. I think someone said they saw him run to the registration desk to get into the $400 deep stack that started about an hour ago.

More action to come...

THE NEXT BIG THING?

He owns a nail salon in Chicago, he has David Pham on speed-dial and he's the best part-time poker player you've never heard of...meet "Supertuan". The aggressive table-talker will have his work cut out for him battling Lacey Jones on Table 26.

DAY 2

WPT BORGATA POKER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Borgata regular and all-around nice guy, Bo Toft, has drawn a tough Day 2 table as he's seated with Dean Hamrick (seat 8) and Roy Winston (seat 7) on Table 32. Both of these well accomplished pros have chips, proceed with caution Bo.

Poker pro Chris Bell won't find a soft spot in seat 4, as Justin Levy, brother of online phenom Adam "Roothlus" Levy, tries to make his own mark on the live poker scene. Bell was a Borgata Poker Open late arrival, he finally made it to Atlantic City after spending the weekend in Pinehurst, North Carolina with Gavin Smith. Both were attending the wedding of friend and fellow poker pro, Mike Gracz.

As short stacks bust and big stacks emerge, we'll have all the action LIVE from Borgata...

JASON DEWITT MIGHT HAVE TO MULTI TABLE

Jason Dewitt made it to day 2 here at the Championship Event with more than $67k in chips after playing day 1a.

Yesterday he played in the WCOOP ($5k entry, online) main event and is currently 1st in chips with T925,921 with play set to resume at 5pm today. With 178 players left out of the 2144 that started, he has a very good opportunity to go really deep. With First place paying $1.7mil and second paying $1.3mil it's an opportunity he wants to take full advantage of.

"I'm not thinking about it right now. I'm going to focus here now and see what I can do. I love the tournaments here, and it's why I am playing. With the opportunity in the online event, I certainly will have some decisions to make."

We'll keep an eye on his progress throughout the day.

START OF DAY #2

555 players are piling into the room. We are searching for seat assignments and interesting match ups.

The atmosphere in the room holds excitement and anticipation, and there is a lot of energy flowing.
Unlike the previous days, where there didn't really seem to be much excitement at all, the players are chatting, loud, and a lot of laughing can be heard.

We'll call today "moving" day. I'll post some match ups shortly, and expect the info to come fast and furious today as players maneuver to go deep, or just plain go busto.
