PROTECTING STACKS

Here's a hand that pitted two of the bigger stacks against each other. David Shrewsbury raised from middle position to 8000 and it folded around to Mark Salinaro on the button. Salinaro made it 20,500 straight, and it folded back to Shrewsbury who made the call.

The flop came [3h 5c 6d] and Shrewsbury led out 30,000. Salinaro moved all in, and Shrewsbury asked for a count. "About 120k left" replied Salinaro. Shrewsbury thought for a bit and folded after looking at his cards.

He whispered to himself about folding a big pocket pair, and Salinaro scooped the big pot.

We're two hours away from breaking for the night and will have more hand histories and all the action as it comes.

EVENT #6 - FIORENTINI, 6TH PLACE

6th, Steve Fiorentini - $18,200

Steve Fiorentini (Winchester, MA) is crippled by Barry Jefferson and finished off by Alex Santiago. Firoentini (K K) puts Jefferson (A 9 suited) all-in for 300k, but falls behind when an ace flops.

"I had a real chance to get to a million (in chips)," says Fiorentini, who collects $18,200 for finishing 6th. "Instead I'm last in chips."

A few hands later, Fiorentini goes all-in for his last 229k and is eliminated when his (A9) doesn't catch up to Santiago's (A 10). "No regrets. I was aggressive when I needed to be," he says. "I'm looking forward to the Main Event and I'll be back for the heads-up."

Level 22 is underway (15K/30/3K).

EVENT #8 INTO LEVEL 13

We are back with you after a few technical difficulties and now able to start with more updates.

The last two levels saw us drop nearly 200 players over two levels (100 minutes) of play. There are under 280 remaining in the field and still a very long way from the money. Mike Sica was the latest name player to hit the rails quieting the table down a little, but Will "The Thrill" is still there. The biggest noise in the room was when the staff announced that play would resume tomorrow at 12pm regardless of how many players remain. It seems unlikely that we will reach the money before the 2am cutoff.

It's now a little easier to gather chip counts as the bigger stacks are staying at their table where we can track them and some players are beginning to emerge.

Allison Weisbrod - $420,000
Michael V - 350,000
David Shrewsburg - 280,000
Mark Salinaro - 240,000
Jason Warriner (7th place in Event #7) - 220,000

We are now in Level 13 with blinds at 1,500-3,000 with 300 ante. Average chipstack is approximately 86,000.

EVENT #6 - SILL, 7TH PLACE

7th, John Sill - $14,560

After a couple of final table eliminations in the 1k tournament, the players see a flop. John Sill bets 45k and is reraised by Wayne Mernone to 135k. Sill contemplates and eventually makes the smooth call.

Players see a flop of [6 8 J] and Sill pushes all-in for 150k. Mernone snap calls and turns over (K K) and is way ahead of Sill's (Q Q).

"I almost got away from it preflop," says Sill, who earns $14,560, "but what are you going to do? It was a great two days. I can't argue with anything."

Blinds continue with Level 21 (10k/20k/3k ante).

EVENT #6 - BERGER, 8TH PLACE

8th, Seth Berger - $10,920

In the second straight elimination of the 1k event, all the money's in preflop. Seth Berger (Malvern, PA) shoves his final 181k with (A 10) vs. Brad Hood's (A Q) and the board is no help.

Berger's out in 8th place, earning $10,920.

"I was really impressed with the quality of play," says Berger. "Players were making good lay downs. And to make it to a final table with this caliber of play, I'm thrilled."

EVENT #6 - HILL, 9TH PLACE

9th, Billy Hill - $7,280

As the blinds climb a lot of the action in the 1k is happening preflop. William Hill, who starts the day 45th out of 46 players shoves all-in pre with (K J) and runs into Wayne Merone's (AK).

Hill gets no help and is out in 9th place, collecting $7,280. "I'm happy with how I finished considering I was so short," he says. This is Hill's second cash in the Poker Open after finishing 11th in Event #1.

EVENT #6 - KNEE, 10TH PLACE

"Action Bob" Hwang lives up to his nickname as the chips are flying at the final table.

Andrew Knee leads out and is reraised by Hwang, putting the pressure back on Knee, who calls his off his last 400k. Knee's on the short end of (A K) vs. (AQ) and doesn't catch up.

Hwang is up over 1 million chips, while Knee earns $7,280 for his 10th place finish.

FINAL TABLE - EVENT #6

It doesn't take long to set the final table in the 1k. Shortly after returning from break, three players see a flop. On a board of [9 10 5] [J], Louie Esposito check raises all-in his last 40k and John Sill snap calls with the nut straight (K Q).

Esposito is crushed, as (Q 8) is the second nuts and lands him on the rail in 11th place. He collects $4,732 and sets the final ten.

The action is fast and furious and we'll try and update chip stacks ASAP.

Level 20 (8k/16k/2k ante) continues.

DINNER BREAK (EVENT #6)

11 players remain in the 1k after Benjamin Reinert (Salisbury, MD) ships his final 79k to Andrew Knee (Mount Sinai, NY). Reinert (8 10) doesn't connect against his opponent's (K Q) and Reinert's out in 12th place, good for $4,732.

We'll post full chip counts as players return from the 1 hour dinner break.

When play resumes at 9:40 pm, one more elimination sets up the final table.

EVENT #8 LEVEL 10

The players have gone through their dinner break and made it through Level 9 still grinding away with the monster chip stacks in search of the magic hand to propel them to the top of the leaderboard. At this point we cannot find any player or stack that is far away the top of the heap. The field has only been reduced to approximately 470 and it's still near impossible to update on the average players. The pace is moving along nicely but I suspect after the next couple hundred bustouts things will grind to a crawl. The blinds in relation to the stacks, plus the approaching money bubble will make players a little more cautious with those speculative hands.

The most interesting table to observe over the last few levels has Will "The Thrill" Failla in the 4 seat next to Mike Sica in the 5. Combined they are carrying the conversation and play to the rest of the table. At times you will see a new dealer at the table shake their head until the talking settles into a normal pattern.

Level 10 brings the blinds up to 600-1200 with 200 ante. Average chip stack is around 50,000.

PLAYER UPDATES

Armando "Better Late Than Never" Gabrielli is out (15th), as is former chip leader Paul Volkwine (14th).

Volkwine knows his (K J) push on Wayne Merone (A K) was his downfall. "I should've just sat there," says Volkwine who earns $3,640. "I cost myself some money because I'm and idiot."

Players continue to bust and it looks like we'll have a final table before the 8:30 pm dinner break.

Level 18 continues (6k/12k/2k ante).

STEADY STREAM (EVENT #6)

1k Eliminations

18 Aziz Wehbey (Whitehall, PA) $2,548
17 Randall Pfeifer (East Amhurst, NY) $2,548
16 John Whiting (Philadelphia, PA) $2,548
15 Armando Gabrielli (Manhasset, NY) $3,640
14 Paul Volkwine (Runnemede,NJ) $3,640
13 Eric Kolodny (N. Miami Beach, FL) $3,640

QUICK CHANGE

Mernone Makes the Call

It doesn't take long for Paul Volkwine to go from chip leader to short stack. On the second hand back from break, Volkwine limps in early position and is raised by Wayne Mernone (Lawrenceville, NJ). Volkwine shoves, putting Mernone in the tank.

After mulling it over, Mernone calls and sees his (A K) is way ahead of Volkwine's (K J). The board offers no help and Volkwine ships 300k to Mernone, who's now the chip leader with more than 600k.

Volkwine loses another hand and more than 400 of his 550k stack.

Other notes:

Heather Sue Mercer (New York, NY) is the last woman standing and busts in 19th place, good for $2,184.

Steve Fiorentini continues to build is stack north of 500k.

Fans of William Hill (Silver Spring,MD) are impressed with his resurrection. After starting the day 45th out of 46 in chips, he's at the final two tables with 200k, below the average stack of 315k.

Blinds are up 6k/12k/2k ante (Level 18)

CHIP LEADERS EMERGE (EVENT #6)

Volkwine is Clear Leader

After a steady stream of bust outs, action in the 1k is slowing down. Just back from a color-up break, it's clear that Paul Volkwine (Runnemede, NJ) is the chip leader with 550k.

His big hand comes when his (7 7) runs down the (A A) of "Action Bob" Hwang (Barnegat, NJ). "No, pocket aces weren't good to me the second time," says Hwang, who ships more than 300k, leaving him with 100k.

Earlier in the day Hwang's (A A) knocked out Steven Karp (No. Miami Beach, FL) who's (A K) is no good, after starting the day second in chips.

Steve Fiorentini (Winchester, MA) is second in chips with 480k, as 19 players remain with an average stack of 230k.

Level 17 is up and running (5k/10k/1k ante).

EVENT #8 ON DINNER BREAK

Everyone remaining in Event #8 are heading off on their dinner break to their favorite Borgata restaurant. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the die hard football fans stick around to take advantage of the poker kitchen and huge TV's showing the game. Some of players we've been following have either been knocked out or moved to a table where they haven't been spotted yet. Moran Michilovich, Mike Kalfa, Alvin Delgado, and Frank Cieri.

The loudest moment in the room so far, besides the Eagles/Jets/Giants fans, occurred on table 45 between two anonymous players. This involved a battle of the two outers. All the chips were the middle preflop with AA feeling confident against a pair of ducks. The flopped two caused the first commotion and drew my attention to table when half the table jumped to their feet. Once things settled, the dealer routinely pealed and Ace on the turn. To the credit of the 22 man, he didn't do anything crazy except rap the table and ship the chips.

From counting the tables which have been broken so far, we are down under 600 players. Just a mere 500 players from the money bubble. After the floor staff performs the color up and chip races, we will try to track down the bigger stacks in the room and report back.

Below is a site you don't see very often during the Borgata Poker Open. The tournament floor empty of everyone except tournament staff. With Event #6 and the Super Satellite moved to the poker room, the Deep Stack Event #8 is the only one playing here at the moment. The players are off enjoying their dinner break.

WILD, CRAZY & INSANE (EVENT #6)

Gabrielli, Better Late Than Never

The 1k tournament is hand for hand and stuck on 37 players for 30 minutes. After a break to color up, a "wild, crazy and insane hand," as one player describes it, unfolds on the first hand back.

With blinds at 3k/6k/500 ante, Bradley Hood (Oakdale, PA) raises UTG to 16k when Matthew Pincus (Colts Neck, NJ) shoves all-in for 40k, setting off a chain reaction. Robert Hwang (Barnegat, NJ) shoves all-in for more, Armando Gabrielli (Manhasset, NY) joins the party for 43k and it's back to Pincus.

After confirming that in the case of mulitple eliminations, the shortest stack will be the bubble and miss the cash, Hood is also all-in and players reveal.

Hood (AA)
Hwang (AA)
Gabrielli (KK)
Pincus (99)

The flop brings a king, giving Gabrelli the lead. The board bricks and after confirming Gabrelli has Pincus covered, Pincus is on the rail.

On a side note, Gabrelli was MIA to start the day after oversleeping for the first hour of the restart. Gabrelli hustles to his seat and sees he was blinded out 30k and relieved he's still alive.

"A ran all the way down here," says Gabrelli after arriving at the Event Center where the tournament was suppossed to be held. After realizing the final five tables were moved to the poker room, Gabrelli was finally in his seat.

"You guys can't call my room," he says to guys at the table. One buddy snaps back, "your 40 and we have to worry about waking your a$$ up?"

Play is now on 4 tables, as players slowly bust out and head to the cage. Places 28-36 collect $1,820.

EVENT #8 BY THE NUMBER

With 30 minutes left in Level 6, we have our official numbers in. 935 players entered the $500 + $60 Deep Stack No Limit Hold'em Event #9 creating a $467,500 prizepool. 90 spots will pay with the winner taking away $108,367 and a very nice trophy for their case. 12 tables have been broken so we've lost over 120 players to this point.

EVENT #8 STARTING LEVEL 5

The "unofficial" numbers are in and Event #8 has 939 runners creating a prizepool just under $500,000 for the $500 + $60 tournament. Players are just coming back from their second break and an eyeball count looks like we've lost over 40 players with at least 4 tables broken. Anna Wroblewski seems to be an early victim as she's no longer seated at her low numbered table. If she's been moved, I haven't found her yet.

With the Event Center being completely packed for Event #8, the restart of Event #6 as well as the 3pm Super Satellite have been moved down the poker room. This is causing a little confusion as players tend to ignore the PA announcements.

Eyeballing some of the stacks around the room and we have Moran Michilovich is sitting with 24,000. Alvin Delgado with 20,000 and Frank Cieri with 12,000. Mike Kalfa told me to not even bother counting his stack.

We will be back as soon as we get the official entrant and payout numbers.

FAMILIAR FACES IN NEW PLACES (EVENT #6)

After the fabulous numbers for the Deep Stack, tournament officials gladly moved the remaining 46 players still alive in the 1k (Event #6) to the poker room. It takes some juggling for players, staffers and the media to make their way from the Event Center, but as always the top notch staff gets things underway.

"It's crazy, but all worth it," says floor supervisor Nasir Mahmood as cards are in the air.

Play is tight as play begins 10 spots from the money. Allen Bari (West Orange, NJ) returns as chip leader with 309k.

Level 14's underway (2k/4k400 ante).

EVENT #8 MORE NOTABLES

For the first time this series, the tournament room sold out at 900 players and went to alternates. At the end of Level 2 there are still several players hanging around the Tournament Director area waiting for their names to be called. Once we have the official numbers we will get them right out to you.

The poker tournament room at the Borgata on Sunday during the NFL season seem to be just a little more amped up than normal. Players are dividing their time between playing their hands and watching a football game on one of the 4 giant TV screens around the room. If something big happens for a New York on Philadelphia team, the cheers are almost as loud as someone hitting a one outer for a monster pot. It's a great atmosphere here today.

The players are just coming back from their first break and another walk through the tournament area found more names to watch. I'm not sure how I missed on my first pass, Anna Wroblewski is playing in today's field as well at Matt Fox and Mike Sica. Big name Borgata regulars making their way up to the tournament area are Mike Kalfa, James Boyle, Alex "The Jedi" Neponyaskhiy, Manny Patel, Evy Ankers, and Roz Quarto.

We did end up losing a player on the very first hand of the tournament. An anonymous player ended up with all his chips in the middle pre-flop with AJo versus AA. 500 big blinds were shipped on the first hand of a deep stack tournament with the JackAce.

We will be back as soon as we have the official numbers or if something spectacular occurs.

Anna Wroblewski is here for Event #8

EVENT #8 UNDERWAY

Players are still lined up down the hallway as Event #8 kicks off and this looks to the be biggest field of the 2009 Borgata Poker Open to date. There are some big names waiting to enter the field but a quick walk through found Event #3 and #4 winners Chris Reslock and Adam Lippert, Borgata regular Alvin Delgado and Will "The Thrill" Failla.

PPI member Frank Cieri was registered early and has taken his seat. He told me to say hi to his wife Fran back at home. She's at home babysitting and would much rather be here playing. Frank said he's going to try to make it worthwhile by taking down the tournament.

We'll be back later as things settle and we can get a better feel for who's in the field.

EVENT #8 GETTING READY

90 minutes before the kickoff of Event #8, the registration line is long and winding through the lobby. This promises to be one of the best events of the series as the Borgata runs the best structured tournament you will see for this price.

Event #8 is the $500 + $60 Deepstack No Limit Hold'em. Each players begins the tournament with 25,000 (500 big blind) and 50 minute levels.

We'll be back after the start of the tournament with a walk through the tables.

LAST WOMAN STANDING

1st Woman, Nicole Rowe - $11,889

Nicole Rowe (New Windsor, NY) outlasted 267 other ladies to be the last woman standing in the Ladies Event, unfortunately a man kept her from winning the tournament.

Abraham Korotki (Ventnor City, NJ) in a controversial move, entered the field and won the title. For Rowe, not winning the event is disappointing, but not devastating. "It doesn't matter," says Rowe, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. "It was 16 hours of being cancer free, a diversion from my reality."

Rowe will have a double mastectomy in the next two weeks and used the tournament to, not only escape the emotional drain, but to help inform the women. "I told everyone at all my tables, 'if your under 50, make sure you get a sonogram along with your mammogram, or else your mammogram is useless.'"

"It's a shame she didn't win," says 5th place finisher Jena Ross, "but our thoughts and prayers are with Nicole."

Rowe says she'll donate $500 to breast cancer research and will need the rest of her winnings to help cover expenses for the 6 weeks she'll be off from work.

Korotki says he'll also donate part off his $20,982 winnings to the cause. "That's very nice of him," says Rowe, when told the news. "Even just to think of that is very nice."

"We know who the real winner is," adds Ross. "She (Nicole) was the last woman standing."

LADIES "CHAMPION"

1st, Abraham Korotki - $20,982

They only play a few hands heads-up, when Abraham Korotki eliminates the last remaining woman, Nicole Rowe to win the Ladies Championship.

Rowe bets 200k preflop, Korotki raises to 600k. Rowe shoves all-in, which Korotki calls. Rowe tables (A 9) vs. Korotski's (10 10). The board is no help to Rowe and she's eliminated in second place.

"I wanted to win the title," says Rowe who earns $11,889 for second place. "I came in second already," referring to her finish in the Ladies event at the 2007 Borgata Winter Open. "I can't believe I lost a ladies event to a guy."

This finale was the last thing the ladies in the field wanted to see, but Korotki was respectful after 16 hours of play.

"It's always nice to win a tournament," says Korotki, who takes home $20,982. "The ladies played very well and it's always nice for the weaker sex to have a victory."

Korotki says he's going to split his winning's between three, yet determined charities. The causes will focus on breast cancer research, children and animals.

LADIES 3RD PLACE - MALONEY

3rd, Lisa Maloney - $6,539

Lisa Maloney's roller coaster final table ends with a third place elimination. Maloney gets it in ahead with (A9), but is run down by (A7) when a seven hits the river to take her remaining 400k.

"I'm pleased, it was a lot of fun," says Maloney, who wins $6,539 for tird place.

Heads-up play is underway with the last woman standing, Nicole Rowe, against the only man in the Ladies field, Abraham Korotski. The players are nearly even in chips.

LADIES 4TH PLACE - SHERWOOD

4th, Sherwood - $4,896

After dominating the final table early, Jenn Sherwood stumbles in one hand and finishes 4th in the Ladies Event.

With seven players remaining, Sherwood and Lisa Maloney lock horns with a board of [A Q 5] and Maloney leading out for 100k. Sherwood, reraises all-in and Maloney snap calls for her remaining 350k.

Sherwood sees her (AJ) is way behind to Maloney's (AQ) flopped two pairs.

"That was the turning point," says Sherwood, who collects $4,896 for 4th place. "I didn't have to lose 400 (thousand) that hand. She was pretty tight. If I had just min raised, I think I could've gotten away from a shove and only lost 200"

That hand knocks Sherwood down to 300k, while bolstering Maloney to 1 million in chips.

Sherwood is eventually eliminated by Abraham Korotski when she puts her last 215k all-in with (KQ suited) against his (8 7 off). The turn brings a 7 and Korotski sends Sherwood to the rail.

"I played well," says Sherwood, "just disappointed with one hand."

LADIES 5TH PLACE - ROSS

5th, Jena Ross - $4,196

Jenn Sherwood raises under the gun to 80k with blinds at 15k/30k. After getting two callers, Jena Ross pushes all in for 84k more in the big blind. All three players call the reraise and check it down to the river.

Sherwood reveals (A2), but was dominated and 4 flushed by Abraham Korotki's (A 7), who takes down a 675k pot. "I'm happy I made the money and the final table," says Ross who collects $4,196 for 5th place.

Ross adds, "make sure you give a shout out to my coach Judy, without her I wouldn't have done this well."

LADIES 6TH PLACE - FAKTOR

6th, Dawn Faktor - $3,497

After surviving with pocket jacks, Dawn Faktor's luck runs out when her (AK) is rivered by Abraham Koroki's (A10).

"I knew that was going to happen, it always does," says Faktor, who collects $3,497 for 6th place." I played great, the best I ever have. I can't wait to play again in January, I'm psyched."

LADIES 7TH PLACE - HAINDLE

7th, Kate Haindle - $2,798

Dawn Faktor pushes all-in under the gun for 71k (JJ), Kate Haindle calls for less (A8), as does Nicole Rowe (J9).

The board bricks for everyone and Faktor's pocket jacks scoops the 220k pot and eliminates Haindle. "I'm tired, I have a three hour drive, I just want to get out of here," says Haindle who earns $2,798 for 7th place.

LADIES 8TH PLACE - BAER

8th, Kelly Baer - $2,098

Kelly Baer shoves 150k all-in with pocket eights and Jenn Sherwood calls with [A 9]. The flop brings an ace and ends Baer's day.

"I just hate races," says Baer. "I was going to fold, but what am I suppossed to do? I'm short stacked, the blinds are getting high, I went with it and lost."

Sherwood knocks out her third player at the final table, as Baer collects $2,098 for 8th place.

LADIES 9TH PLACE - DAVIDSON

9th, Crystal Davidson - $1,399

Jenn Sherwood is now two for two, as she claims her second final table victim.

Sherwood has pocket kings against the (44) of Davidson, a king flops and it's all over, as Davidson's out in 9th place.

"I played well," she said. "I only had one really, really, really bad beat."

The hand in question was also against Sherwood, when Davidson had (KQ) against Sherwood's (99) with two tables left. The flop is [QQ2], giving Sherwood a huge lead, but a [9] on the turn gives Sherwood the boat, taking 120k from Davidson's stack.

Sherwood and Davidson have developed a friendly rivalry after playing together at a previous Ladies event final table earlier this year. Davidson earns $1,399 for 9th place

BAG AND TAG (EVENT #6)

While the Ladies are battling it out in the back of the Event Center, the 1K tournament is inching its way towards the cash at the front half of the room. Unfortunately, the bubble doesn't break tonight and 46 players return Saturday, 2pm to finish out the tournament.

36 players make the cash, as they play for a top prize of $105,560

LADIES 10TH PLACE - GANIN

10th, Ganin - $909

It doesn't take long for the first elimination from the final table, as Barbara Ganin's all-in for her last 25k. She gets three callers, who all check it down.

Jenn Sherwood never looks at her hand in the big blind, but turns over the winning hammer (2 7) and her pair of twos takes it down.

Gannin's out with (A Q), but collects $909 for 10th place

QUICK BUBBLE (LADIES)

Hand for hand play is virtually nonexistent, as the bubble breaks with two simultaneous bustouts, knocking the Ladies field from 29 to 27. Kate Haindl (Havertown, PA) is officially credited with eliminating the 28th player, getting the remaining players into the money.

Haindl is in the big blind with (7 4 suited) and calls a preflop raise. Three players see a flop, including the bubble girl, and Haindl hits the 7. She moves all-in to isolate and takes down the winner. Haindl is still below average with 85k

"I was getting short and there was a lot of money in the pot," says Haindl, "that's why I called."

Players heading to the rail include Lacey Jones, who shoves her last 38k all-in with (99), only to run into the big blind's (AA).

"This sucks," she says while walking to collect her $525. A full list of money winners will be posted Sunday morning.

Play is now on Level 17 (5k/10k/1k ante). The average stack is 100k.
